Music-taste Examination

Postby Dragonskull » Wed Feb 11, 2009 1:46 pm

Meh, last time we talked about what music we liked, there was a dispute between metalheads and hip-hop-ers, and later a war in-between metalheads :D
I would anyhow, like to try again, this time with a poll for easy data-withdrawal :P

If anyone has better names for each class of music taste, come with them..

Lack of clarity demands of me this, here's extended information:

Metalhead
- Added all genres of Metal here because it could be considered biased with two metal options (though they are very different, and true metalheads will consider this blasphemy
Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Nu Metal, Gothic Metal, Industrial Metal, Trash Metal, Synth Metal, Metalcore.. + basically everything Metal.

Mainstream
Classic Rock, Pop, Radio Hits.. anything missing? Let me know.

Electro
Techno, Trance, Dance, House, Electronica, Hardcore, various -core .. want more, tell me.

Cultural
Jazz, World, Folk, Opera.. please come with more if you know.

Gangster
Hip-Hop, RnB, Rap.. there's more too.

Various "light rock" ..
Country, Blues.. ++

--
Can't quite place these: Soul, Classical, New Age, Reggae .. or any other I have forgot, there's MANY sub-genres of all, but I like to stick with super-genres.

i used to like blind guardian only, which would class me as a metalhead. but as of later, i've started to listen to more and more bands, i even like some country (it's not that bad). some people use the automated response "i like everything except rap and country" i think that is stupid.

my favorite bands other than blind guardian are flogging molly and extremoduro, and they're folk rock and rock =)

i listen from rock to country, doesnt matter i don't touch pop music though, there are limits even for me

I'm a metalhead but I do listen to others forms of music too. It's nice to take a break from metal sometimes and just listen to old school rock 'n' roll like Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran, for example.

Hehe, I wander between a few as well, but I consider myself a metalhead, I also listen to some Nu Metal though, and when I've had enough metal for a while, I jump onto some World music and the likes; Era, Deep Forest, Enigma, Amethystium.. etc

I've selected 'Cultural', but I do like a lot of different styles of music. Trying to set a quick timeline of additions (I do not follow trends. As well, I don't change one style for another, etc, etc) we have the following:>

New Age/World Music (Vangelis, Yanni, Jean Michel Jarre, Enya, Clannad, Celtic Woman...) 1998 - Chariots of Fire - Tribute to Vangelis. First CD my fa6ther gave me. As per the title, it's a tribute to one of the best musicians alive. Vangelis.

Brazilian Rock (Titãs, Barão Vermelho, Uns e Outros, Ultrage a Rigor...) 1999 - Barão Vermelho na Calada da Noite - Double CD of the band, got me started on a bluesy rock.

Synthpop/80's Dance/New Wave (Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, New Order, Kraftwerk, A-Ha, A Flock of Seagulls, ABC, Human League, Arcadia...) 2000ish - I actually still don't own a record of any of those bands, but from lsutening to radio airplay I got interested in that sound (espeiclaly because of the use of keyboards and synthetyzers, given I was taking piano lesosns at that time). Still my favourity style of the electronic genre nowadays.

Blues, Soul, Rock, Funk, Progressive Rock, 70-80's Pop-Rock (Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Genesis, Simon & Garfunkel, Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Gabriel, Chaka Kahn, Eric Clapton, Beach Boys, Paul McCartney, Diana Ross, Earth Wind and Fire, Bread, Blood Sweat and Tears, Rainbow, Dio, Jeff Beck, America, ROXETTE!...) 2000ish - My father has several Cds of all those bands, and a lot more.

Punk, Experimental Rock, Hard Rock, Powerhouse Rock (Def Leppard, Blue Oyster Cult, Asia, Van Halen, Rush, Alice Cooper, Led Zepellin, Back Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Queen, Midnight Oil, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie) 2002 - One things leads to another. Have a few discs of some of them and downloaded the rest. Also some of my favourite bands.

Glam Rock/Metal, Love Hardcore (Twisted Sister, Poison, Ratt, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Kiss, Europe, Scorpions...) 2003 - With a Scorpions CD and 'The Final Countdown' mp3. :P

Post-Punk, Gothic Rock (Joy Division, The Mission UK, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxie and the Banshees, Art of Noise, Clan of Xymox) 2005 - Started listening to those after discovering Post-Punk was the root of New Wave (:o) and Gothic Rock.

Eurodance, Acid House, Classic Trance, Vocal Trance, House, Techno, Ambient, Chillout (WAAAAAAAAAY too much acts, groups and singers) 2006 - Although I am very critical of modern electronic music, I find the early 90's eurodance songs some of the best things to grace that decade. Naturally, I followed on listening to The KLF and it's re-Trance songs, before moving to old (and better) Trance, Vocal Trance and some House and Techno. These Relazing musics are a good soundtrack for browsing the internetz on a rainy, boring day.

"Indie Punk-Rock-Folk-Metal" (The Sounds, Franz Ferdinand, Kings of Convenience, Dandy Warhols, Postal Service, The Killers, Lesbians on Ecstasy, everything post-2005) - Some of them are nice, some of them are crap. I feel I've got the best of the crop covered for now.

Post-Rock(?) and Popera (Sigur Ros, Andrea Bocelli, Il Divo, Sarah Brightman...) 2008 - Experimenting with those at the moment. I find Sogur Ros interesting, and have dowanloaded a few Andrea Bocelli albums.

Other Stuff (Folk, Melodic Metal, Epic Metal, Symphonic Metal, Gothic Metal, Country) - I also listen to some other genres and styles, ocasionally.

Either, there's a band called Back Sabbath that has nothing to do with Black Sabbath, or you did a typo AND placed them in the wrong genre. Although it is nothing like metal is now, this is the beginning of Heavy Metal.

Kind of sad to see Metal and ..
'The Final Countdown' on the same line.. none of those bands are Metal in my book. Puddelrock.

Also here, for me this is like when a Christian reads ".. and then God and Satan gave each other a hug and went separate ways.." - Country and ..
Metal on the same line, but I'll accept your excuse by calling it Other Stuff and just rambling on.

Anyway, I pretty much conclude you listen to everything except barbiepop, rap,
and Nu Metal/Modern Heavy Metal.

indierock, indietronic, pop (not commercial pop though), acoustic, pop punk, punk rock, britpop, electro, electronica.. mostly not so famous bands, i don't like most commercial rock such as "kid rock" or "nickelback" or that gay shit

bands like mando diao, motion city soundtrack, bloc party, rise against, blink 182, +44, used to listen to fall out boy, the wombats, scouting for girls, arctic monkeys, the postal service, death cab for cutie, digitalism (you probably won't know that), MGMT, the kooks, daft punk, coeur de pirate (really nice french acoustic music.. thanks stumbleupon) and A LOT more!

ps: why is the word "G.ay" censored? it's just the colloquial/demotic word for homosexual... so the pleasant uh-oh is "homosexual excrement"

Yes, I was referring to Black Sabbath. And, although I know that they gave Heavy Metal a kick start, I believe Ozzy himself (on his good days) used to say the band sound had much more of Hard Rock than Metal.

I agree, but that's how they are called, aren't they?

Oh, I'm not trying to imply any resemblance between Country and Metal, no. JUst saying which other genres I listen from time to time. I t just happen to have more MEtal variants than other genres. I also forgot to include Reggae, Ska and Classical. :D

Yeah, pretty much that. And 'R&B'.
